Breece Hall’s Historic Milestone Amidst Team Struggles
It’s, uh, tough to celebrate a major achievement like hitting 1,000 rushing yards when your team suffers a heavy defeat, like the 42-10 loss to the Patriots, and sits at 3-13 with no playoff hopes in sight over the last four seasons. That’s where Breece Hall finds himself.
“I’m not happy about it,” Hall expressed. “Yeah, it’s a great compliment, but, honestly, we’ve dealt with so much this season and over the last four years… it just is what it is.”
Starting the game at 954 rushing yards, Hall wrapped up with 1,065. Notably, he’s the first Jets running back to hit this milestone since Chris Ivory back in 2015, achieving it with a 7-yard run late in the third quarter.
When asked if he tracked his progress throughout the game, Hall gave a slight smile and said, “Well.” It’s that kind of modesty that seems to characterize him.
In the fourth quarter, Hall broke through for a 59-yard touchdown run, bringing the score to 42-3. “The play works well as long as everyone does their part,” he explained. “The O-line and the receivers set it up; I just finished it.”
However, immediately after that highlight, he experienced a knee injury on a 1-yard loss and had to be ejected. “It’s okay,” he reassured, adding, “They just wanted to be careful since it felt a bit off. I don’t think I need any tests or anything.”
When questioned about the team’s struggle to become competitive again, he simply replied, “I have no comment.”
Looking ahead, after this season, Hall will be a free agent. Aaron Glenn expressed a desire for Hall to take charge of the running back committee. It’s a shame, really. He feels like he could have reached that 1,000-yard benchmark weeks ago if not for various setbacks, including injuries and inconsistent quarterback play. “It’s unfortunate to have this achievement overshadowed by a loss,” Hall reflected. “But there’s a lot happening here. It’s been challenging, yet I’m grateful. I’m truly blessed to be in this position.”
Support from his teammates is evident. “He’s a really talented fullback, and he deserves this,” said center Josh Myers, adding, “I was excited to be able to help him achieve that.”
