Jets Face Injuries in Game Against Lions
DETROIT — The Jets faced a tough game on Sunday, losing running back Breece Hall in the fourth quarter due to a thigh injury. He got hurt while trying to make a run from the Detroit 4-yard line, which resulted in no gain.
Hall ended the game with 32 yards on 13 carries, marking his second consecutive game of struggle after rushing for over 100 yards in the season opener. “It sucks, but it’s part of the game,” Hall remarked afterward. “I felt something when I was running, and then got tackled and planted it and felt something. So, we’ll see how it goes.”
Additionally, left guard Dylan Parham was sidelined with a left knee injury he sustained in the third quarter. This injury appears to be more serious compared to Hall’s.
The Jets entered the matchup against the Lions with a weakened receiving lineup. Starter Adonai Mitchell, who was questionable due to a finger injury sustained during practice when his finger got caught in a teammate’s uniform, did not play. Mitchell, who is the team’s leading receiver with nine catches for 123 yards, had been practicing while heavily wrapped, with his index and middle fingers seemingly in a splint. Although head coach Aaron Glenn didn’t specify the injury’s nature, he did mention, “I don’t think it’s broke.”
With Mitchell out, the Jets’ receiving corps looked somewhat thin, especially with other wide receivers—rookie Omar Cooper Jr., Tim Patrick, and Arian Smith—already on injured reserve. This meant the Jets relied heavily on Garrett Wilson along with several role players. Isaiah Williams, rookie Malik McClain, and Sterling Shepard, who was signed from the practice squad, contributed as well. Shepard not only caught one pass for 3 yards but also had a crucial two-point conversion that tied the game at 24-24.
The team also missed tight end Mason Taylor, who was out due to a thumb injury. On a positive note, rookie cornerback D’Angelo Ponds and edge rusher Joseph Ossai, both of whom missed the first two games, made their debuts. Ponds had limited playing time on defense and saw some action in special teams.
In the second quarter, tight end Jelani Woods made a notable catch for 20 yards, marking his first offensive touch of the season. With touchdowns from tight ends Kenyon Sadiq and Jeremy Ruckert, this game was significant as it was the first time since 2019 that multiple TEs caught a TD pass in the same game for the Jets.
Moreover, the Jets’ defense achieved a remarkable streak, reaching 20 games without an interception, amounting to 632 pass attempts from opposing quarterbacks. The team had several inactive players aside from Mitchell and Taylor, including running back Kene Nwangwu, cornerback Nahshon Wright, safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, linebacker Kiko Mauigoa, and kicker Blake Grupe.
