Brennan calls Israeli attack on Qatar a risky and unsettling increase in tensions

Brennan: Israeli strike on Qatar 'dangerous and destabilizing escalation'

Former CIA director John Brennan commented on Tuesday regarding recent Israeli strikes in Qatar, suggesting these actions indicate growing instability in the region, especially following recent peace overtures from the Trump administration.

“This escalation is quite dangerous and fraught with tension,” Brennan remarked during an appearance on “MSNBC Reports.”

He added, speaking to host Andrea Mitchell, that the Israeli attacks seem to undermine potential negotiations with Hamas for a ceasefire.

The Israeli Defense Force (IDF) targeted a senior Hamas leader in Doha on Tuesday, which sparked outrage after the extremist groups’ attacks on October 7, 2023.

Brennan expressed concern over how this military action could affect international relations.

“There’s a troubling narrative that appears to have been anticipated by the Trump administration,” he stated, indicating that Qatar, a key US ally, is understandably worried given the US’s lack of explicit disapproval regarding Israel’s actions.

He remarked, “The Trump administration has not opposed the Netanyahu government’s actions, thus implying a sort of green light for such moves.”

It’s worth noting that Qatar hosts the Al Udeid Air Base, which is the largest US military installation in the Middle East and a critical hub for US Central Command (CENTCOM).

This Israeli strike occurs alongside warnings being disseminated to Palestinians in Gaza City, urging them to evacuate as Israeli military operations intensify.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, addressing residents, said, “I urge everyone in Gaza to heed this warning and evacuate the area!” according to reports.

There have been accusations regarding intentional starvation and destruction of vital infrastructure, which Netanyahu has denied, asserting compliance with international humanitarian law.

According to Gaza’s Ministry of Health, the ongoing conflict has claimed over 64,000 Palestinian lives.

On Sunday, President Trump issued a warning to Hamas, urging them to accept ceasefire terms or face further retaliation from Israel.

“Everyone hopes for a swift resolution. The Israelites are open to my terms; it’s time for Hamas to agree as well,” Trump said.

He continued, “I’ve warned Hamas about the repercussions of their refusal. This is their final warning.”
