Brennan Othmann’s long-awaited look with Rangers’ top six paid off

In front of Jake DeBrask, with Vancouver on his back, Brennan Osman led the puck along the wall and towards Braden Schneider.

And so, the 22-year-old rookie finally scored his first NHL points in his 16th career game.

The NHL situation room in Toronto took the secondary assist and gave it to Alexis La Frenzière, who had rimmed the pack around the zone.

“They told me at first, and they switched to it [Lafrenière]. After the match, Osman was notified of the reversal by a reporter in the locker room after the match, saying:

“It's good to keep it out of the way. We want to be happy that we win and continue to push the playoff spot.”

Othmann's first point came when he was skating in the top six with JT Miller and Lafrenière.

Peter LaViolet confused the forward line after the Rangers head coach described it as the first period “dead” and Ottoman got an unusual look alongside the skating players in the first and second lines.

The Toronto native has played some of his best hockey since making his NHL debut on Saturday, January 4th, 2024.

“It was great. You want to do well because you don't know when the opportunity will come,” Osman said. “I think the first shift in the second season is definitely different to playing with those guys. You want to read a little more about them. So the first shift was a bit rocky so we got a penalty back and forth, so you'll try not to fall into rhythm until the second half of the second season with them.

“When we got our shifts and we got it consistently, I thought it was good. I felt better. It's nice to have the opportunity with these types of players.

During last season's three-game cameo, Osman spent each in the third row next to Nick Bonino and Johnny Brozinski

And while battling a nasty cold this season's preseason, he only saw two contests with top six skaters.

Next to Panarin and Philip Chitil, who has been acquired since then, along with Trokek and Lafreniere.

Othmann skated other exhibit games alongside Adam Erne and Brodzinski, Anton Blidh, Bo Groulx, Will Cuylle and Groulx.

Othmann, who scored 50 goals and 97 points in 66 OHL games in 2021-22, has yet to start the NHL game in the top six.

After making his season debut in the fourth line next to Brodzinski and Matt Rempe, Othmann spent a total of eight games next to these two.

He also saw three games with Juso Perssinen and Brozinski, and three games with Brett Bellard and Perssinen before starting the contest with Perssinen and Lempe on Saturday.

Just as it was the long-awaited first point for Ottoman, it was also the much-anticipated top six look.

“I think it's going to put a little weight on my shoulders,” Osman said of his assist. “I didn't need it at the time. It feels a bit good to know that I can contribute a little at this level. Especially with games like that, all the games from here are playoff games.”

The Rangers signed a three-year entry-level contract on Sunday with defender Jackson Dorington, acquired from the Miller Trade Canucks.

Dorrington reports to the Hartford Wolfpack with the remaining seasons of amateur tryouts.

After finishing his junior season at Northeastern University, Dorington scored two goals and 13 assists in 37 games this season, and was a pro at the age of 20.
