Costa Rican officials have revealed that Miller Gardner, the 14-year-old son of former Yankees player Brett Gardner, tragically died from carbon monoxide poisoning last month during a family vacation to the island country.
Tests showed that carboxyhemoglobin saturation, which indicates carbon monoxide bonding to hemoglobin in the blood, reached 64% in Miller’s system. This level is 14% above the threshold deemed fatal.
“It is crucial to mention that next to this room is a specialized machine room, and there is a belief that some form of contamination might be present in these areas.” Stated Randall Zuniga, head of the Judicial Research Agency.
Miller’s family on Tuesday Released a tribute to the teenager in the Charleston Post and Courier.
“In the hearts of his family, friends, teammates, teachers, coaches, and beyond, Miller’s loss will resonate for many years. The Gardner family will always hold dear the locations they explored, the individuals they encountered, the friendships formed, and the memories made together,” the tribute expressed.
“Though Miller’s time with them was brief, his essence will endure through those touched by his way of living,” the family added.
The Yankees also honored Miller prior to the opening day match.
