What started as a calm postgame handshake spiraled into chaos as the Chiefs and Lions clashed in a wild brawl during their Sunday night football match.
The tension began after the Chiefs kneeled to seal a 30-17 victory.
Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes attempted to shake hands with Lions safety Brian Branch, who declined the gesture. Instead, Branch charged at Chiefs wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster, who was celebrating.
Thinking Branch was approaching for a handshake, Smith-Schuster reached out, only to receive a punch to the jaw.
The punch sent Smith-Schuster to the ground, prompting Chiefs running back Isaiah Pacheco to intervene.
After rising to his feet, Smith-Schuster charged at Branch, leading to a scuffle as other players and coaches rushed in to break things up or join the fray. At one point, an unidentified man wearing a Chiefs jacket grabbed Branch and pulled him down.
Mahomes commented on the situation, stating, “We play between whistles. They can do all the extracurricular activities, but we played a great game today. We want to keep the momentum going.” He shared his thoughts with NBC’s Melissa Stark after the game.
Some speculate that Mahomes’ earlier taunting of Branch after a touchdown may have contributed to the tension. Although the league had warned about punishing such behavior, no penalties were issued for Mahomes’ actions.
This situation might explain Branch’s reluctance to shake Mahomes’ hand afterward, but it doesn’t excuse his actions against Smith-Schuster.
Lions head coach Dan Campbell spoke about Branch’s behavior in his postgame press conference, labeling it “inexcusable.” He expressed his disappointment, saying, “I love Brian Branch, but what he did is not acceptable here. I apologize to [Andy] Reid and the Chiefs, as well as to [Smith-]Schuster. That’s not who we are.”
As the league reviews the game footage, it seems likely that Branch will face a significant fine and possibly a suspension, with other players potentially subject to disciplinary measures as well.
