Brian Burns excited about new Giants coordinator following Shane Bowen's dismissal

Giants Defensive Coordinator Fired Following Loss

Brian Burns wasn’t particularly surprised to learn that defensive coordinator Shane Bowen was let go the day after the Giants’ defeat against the Lions. He mentioned, “Once that initial fire starts, things tend to escalate pretty quickly.” It’s not shocking, but it’s still tough to part ways, especially after building a long-term relationship.

The Giants’ owner dismissed head coach Brian Daboll just ten games into the season, with interim coach Mike Kafka firing Bowen shortly thereafter, leaving only two games to go in his interim role.

In the recent game, the Giants were ahead 27-17 with a little over 12 minutes remaining, but the Lions rallied, scoring the last 17 points to win 34-27 in overtime. This marked the fifth occasion this season where Bowen’s defense couldn’t hold onto a fourth-quarter lead.

Burns, who led the team with a career-high of 13 sacks this season, learned about Bowen’s firing when teammate Jevon Holland called him while he was, surprisingly, at home. “I wish we could have done it for him,” Burns reflected. He felt a strong bond with Bowen as a leader on the defense.

Charlie Bullen, who was the outside linebackers coach, has been named interim defensive coordinator. Burns expressed optimism about this choice, saying, “Our defensive staff is experienced and really knowledgeable.” He was particularly glad to see Bullen take over, highlighting the close relationship they developed.

Bullen, hired by Daboll in 2024, had previously worked with Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph at both the Dolphins and the Cardinals. Burns praised Bullen, noting his intelligence and ability to elevate the team’s performance. “Charlie has a wealth of experience and knows what it takes to excel,” Burns commented, crediting Bullen for helping him refine his game.

Burns currently stands second in the NFL for sacks, just behind the Browns’ Myles Garrett, and he attributes much of his success to Bullen’s coaching. Appreciating his guidance, Burns reiterated, “He brought out the best in us all. Every player, including Kayvon Thibodeaux, is performing at their peak.” Bullen’s direct approach compels players to give their all, and it’s inspiring.

Burns also embraced one piece of advice from Bullen: “Do what you haven’t done.” He believes this mantra helped shape his process — from watching film to enhancing his physical preparation. It’s a straightforward yet impactful lesson that Burns is thankful for.
