Giants Upset Eagles with 34-17 Victory

Brian Barnes had a firm grip on Jalen Hurts’ jersey, illustrating perfectly how the Giants turned the tables in their rivalry with the Eagles. They took advantage of the opportunity to earn a 34-17 victory at MetLife Stadium.

On Thursday, Barnes recorded seven tackles and two sacks, tying him for the league lead in the latter category—a testament to the game-changing player the Giants signed in March 2024.

With the Giants up 7-3, Barnes forced Hurts out of the pocket, resulting in an 8-yard loss and a crucial punt on third-and-8.

His second sack was quite the sight. As Barnes moved to the line as a fill-in inside linebacker, he surged through a gap, pushing guard Brett Toth back into the pocket. Even when Hurts started to panic, Barnes didn’t back off. He caught the edge of Hurts’ jersey, yanking him closer before they went down together.

After forcing a fourth-and-17 that led to a punt from near midfield, Barnes celebrated animatedly, holding up two fingers while channeling Spiderman—quite the playful moment amid the intense competition. Following one of his sacks, during which the Giants saw their seventh of the game, several teammates sprang from the sidelines to playfully taunt Barnes.

This extra effort was fitting; it seemed like Barnes had been gearing up since spring, taking his game up a notch.

The next time the Eagles faced a third down, they had to deal with Barnes being blocked by three players, a clear sign of his impact on the field.

In his second season with the Giants, Barnes signed a lucrative five-year, $141 million deal after joining from the Panthers in a package trade that included a second-round pick.

His flexibility to line up in various positions has complemented fellow linebackers Kayvon Thibodeau and Abdul Carter, and it’s clearly paying off. At one point during the game, the Giants had their top four rushers, including Dexter Lawrence, lined up together—a reminiscent throwback to the days of the NASCAR package with defensive stars like Osi Umenyiora and Jason Pierre-Paul.

Barnes applied pressure on Hurts once more, even drawing a chip block from Saquon Barkley as Cordale Flott intercepted a pass that effectively sealed the win.
