Aaron Glenn is set to take on the Jets’ defensive play-calling this season. But what will the new defensive coordinator, Brian Duker, do?
“My main priority is to support AG, to help him excel and put him in the best position to make impactful decisions during games,” Duker mentioned during a video conference with reporters on Wednesday. “Beyond that, there are definitely some adjustments and finer details that come with the defensive coordinator role. Sometimes it’s beneficial to distribute responsibilities, considering how much the head coach already manages. So, I aim to assist with those little nuances. Wherever I can contribute to his improvement, that’s my focus.”
Duker’s appointment as defensive coordinator in January was somewhat unexpected. Glenn had dismissed Steve Wilkes in December with only three games left in the season. After that, he explored various candidates, including seasoned coordinators like Wink Martindale. Ultimately, Glenn decided to take the reins himself regarding defensive strategy and brought in Duker, who he had worked with previously in Cleveland and Detroit, as his coordinator.
“We have a great rapport—this is actually my third time collaborating with him,” Duker shared. “I always believed he would be a strong head coach. I was thrilled to be part of it and to witness his capabilities firsthand. Honestly, he exceeded what I expected—he’s even better as a person. It’s been wonderful to reunite with him and to see his leadership up close.”
Duker previously spent two seasons as the Dolphins’ secondary coach and defensive passing game coordinator. Being only 36 years old, this marks his first role as a coordinator. He expressed enthusiasm about the strong connection he has with Glenn, eagerly accepting the opportunity to work together again.
“We see football in a similar light, which makes our discussions straightforward,” Duker noted. “It clarifies our roles and how we collaborate. We’re familiar with each other’s working styles, so our conversations flowed easily. We were both really looking forward to this.”
