Brian Kelly Addresses Departure from LSU
Brian Kelly has shared his first public thoughts since being let go as LSU’s head football coach. Just under two weeks ago, the university decided to part ways with him, despite the fact that there were still six seasons remaining on his substantial 10-year, $100 million contract.
Interim head coach Frank Wilson, surprisingly, indicated that he will be cheering for Kelly in the upcoming match against No. 4 Alabama on Saturday. It’s a small gesture, but it shows that, perhaps, there’s still some camaraderie there.
Kelly reflected on his time at LSU in a statement, noting, “I think back to all we achieved together.” He mentioned being proud of the players he coached, including a Heisman Trophy winner and numerous athletes who went on to play professionally. Additionally, he highlighted that his children earned advanced degrees at LSU, which adds a personal touch to his tenure.
The announcement of his resignation followed LSU’s 49-25 defeat to No. 3 Texas A&M, leaving the Tigers at a 5-3 overall record and 2-3 in SEC play. During his time in Death Valley, Kelly recorded a 34-14 win-loss record.
“Losses sting, but I cherish every win,” he expressed. “I don’t need to talk about how special it is to play at Tiger Stadium. Wearing the purple and gold was an honor for me.”
Looking ahead, LSU has four more games left this season, but they seem unlikely to make the College Football Playoff this year, partly due to the disruptions under Kelly’s leadership.
Kelly concluded with well-wishes for Coach Wilson and the team, stating, “I hope they give it their all this weekend. We’ll be cheering for them.” He added, “This journey might be ending, but it’s one that will stay with me and my family forever.”
Financially, Kelly is set to receive around $50 million from LSU unless a settlement occurs, making it one of the largest payouts in college football history, second only to Jimbo Fisher’s deal with Texas A&M.
Scott Woodward, the athletic director, will determine Kelly’s successor next season. Kelly’s departure came after public remarks from Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry, a significant figure for the university. There’s been some speculation about potential candidates; for instance, Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin has surfaced in discussions, though interim athletic director Virge Ausberry dismissed any rumors about Nick Saban returning to the program.
