Brian Rolapp, a possible successor to Roger Goodell in the NFL, leaves for the PGA Tour

Top NFL Executive to Lead PGA Tour

In a significant shift, a prominent executive from the NFL is set to become the new CEO of the PGA Tour. Brian Rolapp, who has been serving as the league’s chief media and business officer, will take on this new role after being considered a frontrunner for some time, as reported recently.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell reached out to team executives, sharing the news and his sentiments about Rolapp’s departure from the NFL. In his message, Goodell acknowledged Rolapp’s two-decade career in the league, marking it as a period filled with substantial contributions.

“After 22 amazing seasons of dedicated leadership and enormous contributions, Brian Rolapp is leaving the NFL to pursue other opportunities,” Goodell wrote. He added, “We spent time planning this change, and we are confident that we will manage our responsibilities while adjusting our structure to achieve our long-term strategic goals.”

Interestingly, Rolapp has been on the PGA Tour’s radar since last year, so his new role shouldn’t come as a surprise. A note from PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan back in December hinted at looking outside for new leadership.

Recent reports indicated that the PGA’s CEO search was wrapping up and that Rolapp was emerging as the preferred candidate. Alongside him, NASCAR Commissioner Steve Phelps and others were also considered for the position.

Now, Rolapp will be reporting to the PGA Tour Policy Board. This new CEO role is distinct from the Commissioner’s position, which remains under Monahan’s control.

Rolapp has a strong background in media, having played a key role in securing substantial media rights deals for the NFL, valued at $111 billion over eleven years. He first joined the league in 2003 as the Director of Financial and Strategy for the NFL Network, slowly climbing the ranks to his current executive vice president position.

Goodell highlighted Rolapp’s impact on the NFL, particularly in shaping its media strategy and business operations during times of dramatic changes in the broadcasting landscape. “His achievements include negotiating major media partnerships, overseeing NFL Media, NFL Films, and initiatives to enhance the league’s global presence,” Goodell noted.
