Brian Williams may host Amazon election night special

Former MSNBC host Brian Williams is in final stages of discussing the possibility of hosting a live election night special on Amazon Prime Video, Variety reports. reported Saturday.

Variety newspaper reported this, citing five people familiar with the matter.

However, the magazine notes that officials cautioned that “the concept is not guaranteed to be completed.” Variety reported that Amazon declined to make executives available for comment.

With less than six weeks until Election Day, the purpose of the feature is to create a “cross-partisan discussion” about what happened that night, according to five people familiar with the matter. Variety reported a source said that the show will primarily focus on explaining the news rather than “explaining individual pieces of news.”

According to Variety, sources said Williams will primarily rely on the Associated Press to determine trends among candidates in each state for election specials.

The special could be the independent streaming company's first foray into news-related content, Variety reported. Amazon Prime Video primarily focuses on movies, reality shows, and original scripted series.

However, the source cautioned against viewing the special as a sign that the streaming giant will start producing news-related content on a regular basis.
