Bridgeport road rage shooting suspect was previously convicted of felony murder

A man from Connecticut, Jorge “George” Ortiz, aged 57, was taken into custody after a brief foot chase, following a week-long search. This arrest stems from a fatal road rage incident that resulted in the death of Nelson Batista, a 48-year-old grandfather, in Bridgeport. Ortiz faces charges including murder and illegal possession of a firearm.

The incident occurred on October 12, at around 9 a.m., when Ortiz allegedly shot Batista, who had recently buried his 25-year-old son, an Air Force airman. The two were strangers, as noted by Bridgeport Police Chief Roderick Porter, who described the shooting as a random act.

According to a police affidavit, surveillance footage captured Ortiz following a woman down Park Avenue. As Batista turned down a side street, Ortiz reportedly slapped the side of his SUV, leading Batista to stop and confront him. What started as an altercation escalated, and they began to fight, eventually struggling for a handgun. Two gunshots were detected, one of which struck Batista in the chest, causing his death at the hospital.

Community involvement played a crucial role in Ortiz’s capture, with tips leading to his identification. Witnesses, including one who recorded part of the scuffle on her phone, helped police piece together the events. The video reportedly shows Ortiz attacking Batista with a pistol before fleeing the scene.

Prior to this incident, Ortiz had a criminal history that includes a felony murder conviction dating back to 1992, for which he was sentenced to 30 years. At the time of Batista’s murder, he was not on parole but was under an ongoing misdemeanor drug case.

Batista is remembered as a family man, a passionate fan of baseball—particularly the New York Yankees—and the NFL. He was a father to six and grandfather to three. His son’s funeral had freshly taken place in Louisiana just days before this tragic event.
