Bright Met Gala outfits and more: Letters

flashy gala costume

Growing up with a mom who had a keen eye for fashion, I learned to appreciate the artistry of designers like Chanel, Dior, and Armani. To say I was shocked by the outfits worn by so-called celebrities at the recent event would be an understatement (“A Harsh Met Dress Down,” Cindy Adams, May 6).

The Met Gala has turned into quite the spectacle. Honestly, if the time and money spent on this yearly affair were redirected, maybe we’d be spared the cringe-worthy fashion choices of the wealthy and famous.

Disney’s ICE

So, after ICE agents conducted a raid on the Disney Magic cruise ship, I can’t help but wonder: did they also head to Disney headquarters to arrest those responsible for hiring the staff? (“ICE Arrests Disney Ship Staff,” May 7).

This situation oddly reminds me of a time in New York when the police seemed to focus on taking away sex workers instead of addressing other serious crimes.

scientology craze

A group of individuals vandalized the Church of Scientology in Times Square (“Scienttro Spree”, May 4).

When featured in news reports, one of the culprits often had his face obscured due to his age. But, let’s be clear: they are criminals, no matter how old they are. They should face consequences like adults. If not, perhaps it’s time to involve their parents in this mess.

city hall of shame

Rudy Giuliani undoubtedly deserves a spot in the City Hall of Fame, and many of us have kept him in our thoughts during his recent health issues (“Rudy in the City Hall of Fame,” Michael Goodwin, May 6).

As for Mayor Mamdani, he seems fitted for a disgraceful city hall, which just seems like such a waste.

Youth Max Thing

The American obsession with youth doesn’t seem to be slowing down. It feels like we’re moving past Botox, GLP-1 medications, and butt lifts, with the latest trend leaning towards “Look Max Thing” and peptides (“Max Thing Weight Loss Rx,” May 7).

Young people, along with adults, are really being influenced by social media personalities and their extreme views on perfection. It’s like our vanity is starting to take a toll on our mental health.

Bye-bye, Spirit Air

The news of Spirit Airlines closing its doors after 34 years is a real blow (“Joe the Spirit Killer” Rich Lowry, Post Opinion, May 6).

By 2025, it was set to be the eighth-largest airline in the U.S. and was known for offering incredibly low fares.

The Justice Department’s decision to block Spirit’s 2024 merger with JetBlue—citing competition concerns under the Clayton Antitrust Act—has contributed to this downfall. Honestly, there seems to be less competition now, thanks to Joe Biden and Attorney General Merrick Garland.

Democratic party hypocrisy

Democrats have mastered the art of gerrymandering, yet now that Republicans are doing the same, they’re complaining like children (“Ron OK, New Florida Congressional Map,” May 5).

It’s disheartening to see both parties engage in such behavior. Still, it was the Democrats who paved the way. What’s good for one side should also apply to the other.
