Mysterious Object in New York Turns Out to Be a Rocket Launch

It all began like the plot of a sci-fi movie—an object resembling a glowing pill floating in the sky above upstate New York. Photos captured near Finger Lake on August 12 displayed unusual orbs moving slowly through the mist, sparking a wave of UFO chatter in local Facebook groups.

As more people chimed in, some residents remarked on its “otherworldly” appearance. One person humorously noted, “They’re here,” while another exclaimed, “It’s truly amazing!”

But it seems that the excitement about a potential alien sighting was a bit overblown. What many believed to be an extraterrestrial visit was actually a planned rocket launch.

According to reports, the mysterious orb was confirmed to be the Vulcan Centaur rocket launched by United Launch Alliance from Cape Canaveral, Florida.

Despite attempts to reach out for comments, the agency did not respond.

Interestingly, there have been over 60 UFO sightings reported statewide in the first half of 2025, according to the National Tracking Group.

One expert, drawing from both scientific and military backgrounds, said, “My first instinct is to look for traditional explanations like weather and human aerospace phenomena because many objects in the sky can be explained that way. In this instance, it was both.”

This expert stressed the importance of data verification in separating civilian misinterpretations from actual unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP). “The main protocol involves cross-referencing visual sightings with high-resolution data, including infrared and radar,” he explained. “If they seem to be under intelligent control, we will reach out via radio.”

As reports of UAP sightings rise, more transparency and research are necessary to lessen both the stigma and anxiety surrounding these incidents. “We tend to fear the unknown. Research into UAPs not only mitigates the stigma, but also transforms the mystery into a scientific endeavor,” he concluded.
