Brigitte Bardot Passes Away at 91

Brigitte Bardot, the French actress famously regarded as the original “sex kitten,” has passed away at the age of 91, as announced by her foundation.

The Brigitte Bardot Foundation expressed deep sorrow over the loss of its founder and president. In a statement, the foundation, which advocates for animal protection, noted her decision to leave behind a celebrated career to focus on animal welfare. This announcement was made on their website.

“We want to honor the memory of an exceptional woman who dedicated her life to creating a more respectful world for animals,” the statement continued.

The foundation extended condolences to Bardot’s family, her loved ones, the residents of Saint-Tropez, and all who stand with her cause, reaffirming their commitment to continue her legacy.

Bruno Jacqueline from the foundation informed the Associated Press that Bardot was hospitalized last month and passed away at her home in southern France. Details regarding funeral services were not provided.

The cause of her death has not been made public.

French President Emmanuel Macron shared a heartfelt tribute, praising Bardot’s contributions and legacy.

In his message, Macron reflected on how Bardot represented “freedom” through her films, her voice, and her sheer presence. He described her as a “French presence, a universal radiance,” highlighting the impact she had on many.

Bardot shot to fame as an international sex symbol in 1956 with her role as a teenage bride in “And God Created Woman.” The film, which her then-husband directed, included a memorable scene of her dancing naked on a table, marking a significant moment in the representation of female sexuality during more conservative times.

She left acting in 1973 after starring in nearly 30 films but returned to the public eye a decade later as an advocate for animal rights, even founding the Animal Welfare Foundation.

Bardot is survived by her fourth husband, Bernard Dormal, her estranged son, Nicolas Jacques Charrier, and her sister.
