Solomon Tuliaupupu: A Shift in Focus

There’s definitely something to admire about linebacker Solomon Tuliaupupu. I mean, starting college in Montana for, what, his ninth year? Sure, there are light-hearted jabs about his long college experience, but really, he’s somehow turned a potentially troubled football career into a chance for academic success.

He graduated high school back in 2017 with a promising future ahead in football. Tuliaupupu was an All-American and snagged both the Dick Butkus High School Linebacker of the Year Award and the USA Today Defensive Player of the Year Award. Committing to USC, a place known for developing linebackers, it seemed like he’d make the leap to the NFL easily with his remarkable lateral quickness and outstanding football IQ.

Sadly, things took a downward turn once he hit college. Tuliaupupu was set to start as a true freshman but then suffered a foot injury and ended up missing his entire first year. Moving on to his sophomore year, he faced another setback with a knee injury that needed surgery. To minimize further injuries, he was shifted to defensive end but didn’t see much action during his junior year. Then, he faced yet another injury during preseason, which kept him off the field again.

Finally, in 2024, he got the chance to play, but the impact was limited. Trying to regain his footing, he transferred to Montana seeking more playing opportunities, and now he has his sights set on competing again in 2026.

So, what makes Tuliaupupu stand out? Well, it’s quite simple. Instead of getting lost in the grind of football, he recognized that a string of injuries could either ruin his draft prospects or diminish them significantly, leaving him with few chances for a career in the NFL. Throughout this time, he focused on his education, earning multiple degrees. It does raise the question: why does this 25-year-old still seem to hold on to his college persona as he looks ahead?

As his college football days wind down, he might feel some sense of disappointment about how things played out on the field. However, he’s managed to convert his experiences into a valuable, debt-free education. Plus, he’s demonstrated to potential employers that he knows when to pivot away from negative circumstances and turn them into something beneficial for his career.
