California’s Governor Gavin Newsom has signaled a strong interest in running for the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination, expressing his backing for gender ideology during a recent chat with Ezra Klein from the New York Times.
His remarks stirred reactions not just from political opponents, but also from Trinidadian rapper Nicki Minaj, who expressed concern that his stance might alienate even those struggling with mental health issues in the trans community.
In the interview published on Wednesday, Newsom noted, somewhat on a side, that he believes he represents a majority of Americans. He shared that, while he supports transgender rights, he also has a hope of connecting with transgender children. “I have a transgender godson,” he stated. “No other governor has passed more pro-trans legislation than I have, and I’ve stood firmly for the LGBTQ community.”
This godson he mentioned turns out to be Natalia Williams, 33, a billionaire heiress linked to oil mogul J. Paul Getty, who has transitioned and goes by Nats Getty.
Newsom’s remarks captured attention, leading the Republican National Committee’s social media account to claim that he advocates for what they termed the “sexual mutilation of children.” These comments were later shared by various Republican figures.
Nicki Minaj voiced her dismay over Newsom’s statements, tweeting, “Imagine being a guy trying to see his transgender kids. Any normal adult wants their children to be healthy and happy.” She added, “GavOUT,” expressing her desire for a different leader.
Politics aside, Minaj also complimented Vice President J.D. Vance, calling him an “assassin” in political discourse, highlighting his ability to engage swiftly in debates. She even remarked, “The Vance > The Guv Nots,” hinting at her preference.
Amidst this backdrop, Newsom has implemented several transformative policies in California, including:
- SB-107, aimed at establishing the state as a sanctuary for minors seeking gender-affirming care.
- AB-1084, which simplifies the process for trans individuals to secure appropriate identification.
- AB-223, ensuring confidentiality for minors filing for changes to their gender identifiers.
- AB-1955, which prevents schools from notifying parents if their child identifies as transgender.
A survey indicated that over half of Americans are now in favor of prohibiting gender-affirming medical procedures for minors.
While she critiqued Newsom, Minaj appeared to have a more favorable view of Vance, emphasizing the potential impact he could have moving forward.
