Stranger Things’ Joe Keery looks like the rhythm guitarist of a 2007 band trying to overcome a dismal 4/10 at the NME in 2005. But in reality, he’s also a proper big-time pop star, recording as Djo. His song “End of Beginning” is currently his fifth most streamed song worldwide on Spotify, where he receives 5 million plays per day.

We brought Bring Me the Horizon here. It’s like her mother just arrested her for smoking marijuana. Her mother came to the bus stop with her father wandering helplessly behind. Pass it on, lads! In my opinion they are the best band in the UK and after a year of great singles I think they deserve to win the Rock/Alternative category they are nominated for.

Kylie is as elated as she was to be named Global Icon (capitalized, of course). There will definitely be a comprehensive costume change when she receives that award, and perhaps another costume change to close the show with a hit megamix centered around Padam Padam. By then, all music industry insiders will have drunk about 12 bottles of wine and will be throwing shapes like someone landing a plane on land in a strong wind.

Hello, my name is Laura. This week I learned that Volvo invented his 1959 three-point seat belt for cars, recognized it as a game-changer in safety, and that the Swedish car company has passed on the patent to other companies. I learned that it was given away for free. That’s what I think for no reason as I look at the photo of Best Dance Act nominee and previous winner Becky Hill, but I’m sure of it. (Becky is one of my favorite British characters of recent years, thanks to her propensity to enjoy a vessel of liquid on the table before coming to retrieve the gong.)

I know it’s a cliché to say someone dresses up like Quality Street, but Jacob Collier wore three different Quality Street wrappers here, and he considered a fourth. I highly doubt that.

All the stars from the various reality TV shows lined up to take to the red carpet at around 2pm yesterday, leaving only a few real musicians left. This guy is Cassisdead, leading a group of bodyguards with the Deadcorp project name on them, doing a great job.I wasn’t a big fan of him last year’s album – felt like the lyricism didn’t live up to the ambition of the overall effort – but he admirably does far more world-building than most British artists, and he does a great job of creating stories of crime and trauma. We’re creating a complete cyperpunk dystopia as a backdrop. He will be competing against big names such as Central C, Dave, Little Simz, and J. Hus in the outside bet in the rap genre category, but it will be a fan vote and his fans adore him. So he has a chance.

It may not have as much star power as the Grammys, less critical clout than the Mercury, and essentially celebrate naked commercial success, but damn, the British awards are among the world’s best. A season that remains one of the silliest, most British and, at times, most subversive shows ever.
