James Woods Critiques UK’s Gun Control and Its Consequences
In a recent post on X, actor James Woods highlighted the UK’s historical disarmament efforts, stating that since the late 20th century, Britain finds itself “on the edge of the Islamist abyss.”
He referenced, “Our British friends renounced their right to bear arms in 1997 and today stand on the edge of the Islamist abyss.”
According to reports from September 24, 2024, gun control measures in the UK were gradually introduced, beginning just after World War I. These measures tightened significantly and became more reactionary through the 1990s.
The culmination of these regulations was the 1997 Firearms Act, which was enacted following a tragic school shooting in Dunblane, Scotland. This legislation effectively eliminated handgun ownership and made it considerably challenging to own a long gun.
The aftermath of these restrictions led to a surge in violent crime. A report from the Daily Mail in 2009 noted that, twelve years post-1997 Firearms Act, Britain was deemed “the most violent country in Europe.” Disturbingly, it stated that violence levels surpassed those in both the United States and South Africa.
Additionally, Woods argued that the disarmament in Britain has contributed to a deeper societal crisis, which he referred to as “the abyss of Islamism.”
In an article published in December 2025, Ed Hussain expressed his concerns about the Islamist threat looming over Britain, revealing he felt compelled to speak from abroad due to safety concerns. He noted the fear pervasive in various sectors, from the media to governmental institutions, fearing backlash from extremist groups exacerbated by recent conflicts.
The Hoover Institution highlighted on September 7, 2024, that the foundational cultural ties in Britain are weakening under pressures from economic disparity, immigration, and rising extremism.
Woods further urged Americans to reflect on the significance of the Second Amendment, reminding them that it was designed to empower citizens rather than merely facilitate activities like hunting.
