X number of accounts belonging to British politicians and international organisations were hacked on Wednesday night.
Justice Minister Shabana Mahmood, Labour MPs Chris Elmore and Carolyn Harris and other MPs posted the same message on the social media site and although it was quickly deleted, the message could still be read on TweetDeck, the dashboard used to manage accounts on X, the new Twitter handle.
The message, which also contained a lengthy code, read, “These are Hacked Accounts!!!! We will present you with hacked accounts on SOLANA. For each hacked account, we will publish the token address and pump it to make profits together.”
The message to the justice minister's account was posted at 7.53pm and removed by 7.55pm. This is not the first time a British politician's account on the website has been hacked: Jeremy Corbyn's Twitter account was hijacked in 2016 to post a series of expletive-filled tweets.
One was an insult to then Prime Minister David Cameron, and the other expressed opposition to the Trident nuclear defence programme.
Other accounts that posted the same message on Wednesday night included the World Health Organisation, Great British Menu and the Indian arm of technology company Lenovo.
Many people quickly deleted the hacked messages, but some remained visible for a while. British comedian and actor Suze Kempner told X that her account had also been hacked and that she had changed her password.
