British ultrarunner Jasmine Parris has become the first woman to complete the infamous Berkeley Marathon race in Tennessee.
The 40-year-old was one of only five runners to complete this year’s event, which consisted of five grueling 20-mile loops around Frozen Head State Park. Paris’ finishing time was 59 hours, 58 minutes, and 21 seconds, 99 seconds within the 60-hour time limit.
Paris made headlines in 2019 when she won the Montan Spine Race along the Pennine Way in northern England, breaking the course record for a mixed event by 12 hours. She made more history in the United States on Friday, adding her name to the list of 20 competitors to complete the event since the distance was extended to 100 miles in 1989.
Ihor Velis set the fastest time at this year’s event, with the Canadian-based Ukrainian runner finishing in 58 hours, 44 minutes, and 59 seconds. Americans John Kelly and Jared Campbell also completed the race for the third and fourth time respectively, while New Zealand’s Greig Hamilton also beat the time limit.

In a sporting gesture, Campbell also Looks like they’ve given Paris a choice. Attempting the final clockwise loop is generally considered to be slightly less difficult, as the remaining competitors camped out before the final stage.
Paris, who has two children and works as a veterinarian and research scientist in Edinburgh, first ran the Berkeley Marathon in 2022, completing three laps. He completed the fourth lap in last year’s race, but was outside the time limit.
Known as the “race that eats the young,” the Berkeley Marathon is considered one of the toughest ultramarathons in the world. The forest route varies from year to year, but it is estimated that there are 16,500 m (54,000 ft) of both vertical ascent and descent.

The race was founded by Gary “Lazarus Lake” Cantrell and first ran over 50 miles in 1986. Cantrell lights a ceremonial cigarette to mark the beginning of his annual run.
This unusual event features a trumpeter. A bugler plays a signal when a runner withdraws, but there is little online presence and all social media updates take place. From a certain man’s X account.
