Griner Returns to Phoenix, Leads Dream to Victory
Britney Griner made her return to Phoenix on Wednesday night, marking her first appearance in the city since spending her first eleven seasons there. Now playing for the Atlanta Dream, she notched 17 points and nine rebounds in a matchup against her former team, the Mercury, securing a 90-79 win.
Prior to the game, the Mercury honored Griner with a tribute video, and her long-time teammate Diana Taurasi was present courtside. Reflecting on the experience, Griner expressed how seeing familiar faces and hearing old stories was emotional for her. “When I saw it, when I saw it… it sparked me a bit. I basically went back to the court where I began my career,” she shared, noting how good it felt to reconnect with the crowd.
During her time with the Mercury, Griner played a pivotal role in winning the WNBA Championship in 2014 and was recognized as an All-Star nine times. She also received multiple accolades, including being named Defensive Player of the Year twice. However, she missed the entire 2022 season due to her detention in Russia.
In this season, Griner has started all 21 games for the Dream, registering an average of 10.2 points and 5.7 rebounds. Her performance against the Mercury was particularly notable, as it marked her fourth game this season scoring 17 points.
Griner recently signed a one-year deal with the Dream, furthering her career after a challenging period. Throughout her time in Phoenix, she established remarkable statistics, including an average of 17.7 points and 7.4 rebounds per game over 315 games played with Mercury.
She has built an impressive resume, being a two-time scoring champion and leading the WNBA in blocks on multiple occasions. Griner’s influence on the game continues to be profound as she makes her mark with the Dream.
