Broadcast criticizes Yankees' baserunning following Ronald Acuna's double play

Braves Shine While Yankees Struggle

On Friday, Ronald Acuña Jr. of the Braves showcased his defensive skills, but it didn’t save the Yankees from criticism during their broadcast. The Yankees’ team, notably Michael Kay and Joe Girardi, pointed out lapses in the Bronx Bombers’ base running.

In the top of the third inning, Acuña made a significant catch, throwing out Yorvit Vivas at third base from second. It was an exceptional play that preserved the game for Atlanta, preventing New York from advancing its runners. Ultimately, the Yankees faced a disappointing 7-3 defeat in their first game back from the All-Star break.

Kay and Girardi noted how the Yankees missed a key opportunity after a double play left them with no runs during that critical inning. “That can’t happen. These are the little things that Aaron Judge sacrificed a chance to hit first and third,” Girardi remarked. Kay added, “You just took the bat out of Judge’s hands. First of all, you don’t slide if you’re not running hard to third. There’s no excuse.”

Kay emphasized that the Yankees’ base running has been problematic for about a month now, which has undoubtedly affected their performance.

Acuña, honored as an All-Star for the fifth time this week, has had a remarkable season after overcoming adversity. Last May, he suffered an ACL tear, undergoing surgery just three days later. Despite the setback, he has made a strong comeback, boasting 12 runs and 22 RBIs over 45 games in the first half.

His current statistics are impressive, featuring a .323 batting average and a 1.025 OPS, positioning him as one of the top hitters in the league this season.
