Broadcast media leader Nexstar teams up with Sinclair, continuing the suspension of 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!'

Broadcasting Decisions Impact ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ Airing

Nexstar Media Group, a major player in broadcast media, has opted not to air ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ alongside Sinclair Broadcast Group, even though ABC has lifted the suspension on the show. This decision follows a statement from Nexstar regarding Kimmel’s recent comments, which they labeled as “ill-timed and insensitive” during a crucial period of national discussion.

Nexstar elaborated, saying, “We made a decision last week to preempt ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ and we stand by that decision until we receive assurance that everyone involved is dedicated to maintaining a respectful and constructive dialogue in our markets.”

This news comes shortly after Sinclair announced its own decision to remove the late-night show from its schedule. A representative from Sinclair stated, “Starting Tuesday night, we will be preempting ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ on our ABC affiliate stations, replacing it with news programming. We are still in discussions with ABC as we assess the potential for the show to return.”

A report indicated that Nexstar and Sinclair, combined, manage ABC affiliates that cover over a quarter of all ABC stations, reaching about 23% of households in the country.

The suspension of ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ was put into effect on September 17 due to backlash over Kimmel’s comments regarding the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. This decision was influenced by criticism from Nexstar, Sinclair, and also FCC Chairman Brendan Carr.
