Tragic Death of Former Broadway Actor Imani Dear Smith

Imani Dear Smith, a former Broadway actor known for her role as young Nala in “The Lion King,” was fatally stabbed in New Jersey over the weekend. Following the incident, her boyfriend was arrested and charged with murder.

Smith, 26, was discovered with several stab wounds on December 21 and was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

Middlesex County Prosecutor, Yolanda Ciccone, along with Edison Police Chief, Thomas Bryan, announced on December 23 that a 35-year-old man named Jordan D. Jackson Small had been charged in connection with her death. Although the official statement did not specifically label him as Smith’s boyfriend, it noted that they “knew each other prior to the incident,” emphasizing that this was not a random act of violence.

Jackson Small faces multiple charges, including first-degree murder and several weapon-related offenses.

In the wake of her passing, Smith’s family created a GoFundMe page in her memory, raising over $65,000 which surpassed the initial goal of $50,000. The funds will assist with funeral costs, clean-up of the crime scene, trauma treatment for Smith’s son and family members, as well as legal expenses and ongoing support for her loved ones.

Smith is survived by her three-year-old son, parents, and two younger siblings. The GoFundMe campaign highlighted her vibrant personality and talent, stating that she had so much life ahead of her. Her contributions to the world, particularly as a performer, resonated deeply with those who knew her.
