The Broncos fired linebacker coach Michael Wilhoyt in just over a week after being arrested on suspicion of assaulting a police officer.
Denver head coach Sean Payton revealed his decision in a statement Wednesday night.
“After a thorough discussion as an organization, I met with Michael Wilhoyt and let him know that we decided to say goodbye,” Payton said in a statement. According to ESPN. “We recognize the serious nature of the allegations against him and believe this is the best course of action at this point. I am grateful for Michael's contribution to the Broncos and I am confident that he will move forward in a positive direction.”
Wilhoyt, 38, was arrested on February 23, officially charged with felony assault on an officer and charged with misdemeanor obstructing the mischief of officers and detectives, according to court records seen by the post office.
Former Broncos coach, According to the Denver Postwas caught up in a discussion with the officials of Denver International Airport. They told Wilhoit not to leave his vehicle in the departure lane.
As the conflict escalated, Willhoit was said to have punched the officer in his face, and then touched him before driving.
He was put in jail that day on February 24th before his first hearing.
Wilhoit played six years in the NFL (2011-17) before becoming a special team assistant for Payton and the Saints in 2019.
Hen then joined the Chargers (2021-23) and reunited with Payton on the Broncos in 2023.
Wilhoyt will then appear in court on March 10th.
