Broncos linebacker Alex Singleton played 3 full quarters of game with torn ACL

Denver Broncos linebacker Alex Singleton will miss the remainder of the season with a torn ACL … but he played in the game with a torn ACL.

Singleton was injured during Denver's recent win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and coach Sean Payton said he will undergo surgery “probably within the next two weeks.”

However, Singleton likely played without realizing he had an injury: Payton said he picked up the injury “midway through the game” and “played two-thirds of the game with it.”

“It was surprising. And he reported [that] “He was in a little bit of pain,” Payton said. “They looked into it, we looked into it some more, and yes, he's scheduled to have surgery probably about two weeks from now.”

For Denver, the injury occurred on the game's eighth defensive snap. Singleton played the next 48 times.

Payton added that both he and Singleton were surprised by the extent of the injury.

Aaron Rodgers feels 'sorry' for Brett Favre's Parkinson's diagnosis, says health risks are 'part of our game'

“That's a tough question,” Broncos quarterback Bo Nix said. “If there's one word that describes what kind of guy Alex is, that's it.”

“He's the type of guy that would tear his ACL six plays into a game and still go out there and finish the game.”

“That's crazy,” added Patrick Sartain II.

“Some players had ACL injuries. [tears]”But I've never seen anything like this, I got to see the MRI, I've never seen anything like this that night where I felt like I could play another game. The next morning, you could see the swelling, which is pretty surprising,” Payton continued.

Without Singleton, the Broncos will visit MetLife Stadium this weekend to take on the New York Jets, who are on a two-game winning streak.
