Broncos make Bo Nix sixth QB taken in first 12 picks of NFL Draft

A piece of NFL Draft history was made in Detroit Thursday night when the Denver Broncos took Oregon quarterback Bo Nix with the 12th overall pick.

He was the sixth quarterback the Knicks took in the first round, the lowest number of picks in NFL Draft history with so many signal-callers selected.

The one who was shocked was Michael Penix Jr., who was selected by the Atlanta Falcons. However, the Broncos and head coach Sean Payton acquired the Knicks after the Minnesota Vikings traded with the New York Jets to acquire JJ McCarthy at No. 10.

The Knicks will enter a quarterback room that includes Jarrett Stidham, Ben DiNucci, and Zach Wilson, who the Jets just acquired in a trade to Denver earlier this week.

It’s a crowded room, and it will be up to Payton to decide how much of a quarterback battle this is.

When the Broncos traded Russell Wilson to the Seattle Seahawks two seasons ago, they didn’t want to be in a position to take a quarterback in this year’s draft. However, that marriage did not last long. Denver released him, eating a ton of dead cap money to make way for a new era at quarterback.

Can the Knicks solidify their quarterback of the future in Year 1? Or does Payton at Mile High need time to develop in his system?

Nix started his college career at Auburn, where he played three seasons, but never really shined with the Tigers. He transferred to Oregon State in 2022 and after 13 games, set career highs in yards (3,593), touchdowns (29) and completion percentage (71.9).

But 2023 was definitely his best year yet. He threw for 4,509 yards and 45 touchdowns, completing 77.4 percent.

The Broncos want Nix to continue playing at that level, and he has several weapons available.

Courtland Sutton is the team’s top wide receiver, joined by Josh Reynolds. They could also make a move to bring in more offensive firepower later in the draft.

Before the Knicks can imagine what those connections will be, they must first win the quarterback competition that is sure to be in Denver.
