Sean Payton Penalized for Sideline Collision
Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton was penalized during the third quarter of a game against the Kansas City Chiefs. The penalty was for unsportsmanlike conduct, stemming from a collision between Payton and an NFL official while he was standing on the sideline.
This incident occurred right after Broncos defensive back Jaquan McMillian intercepted a pass thrown by Patrick Mahomes. The referee didn’t seem to notice Payton close by and promptly threw the flag after the contact. Thankfully, neither of them appeared to be hurt from the impact.
Interestingly, this unsportsmanlike conduct penalty was just one of two called after McMillian’s interception. The Chiefs also accepted a penalty for an illegal blindside block on the same play.
However, the Broncos seemed unfazed by the penalty. Quarterback Bo Nix took charge, leading the team on an impressive 11-play, 89-yard touchdown drive following the turnover. Running back Jaleel McLaughlin capped it off with a 4-yard touchdown run, giving the Broncos a lead.
On the next possession, the Chiefs managed to equalize. Running back Kareem Hunt powered his way into the end zone for a 2-yard score, bringing the game to a tie.
This matchup was crucial for both teams, as they vied for a win in the competitive AFC West division.
With a victory, the Broncos could maintain their position at the top of the division, while a win for the Chiefs would keep their playoff hopes alive.
