Broncos’ Sean Payton on comparisons between rookie Bo Nix and former QB Drew Brees

The Russell Wilson experiment came to a screeching halt in March.

The 35-year-old signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers after the Denver Broncos acquired Zach Wilson in a trade in April and, despite veteran quarterback Jarrett Stidham still being on the roster, were looking to bolster their quarterback corps in this year’s draft.

The 2024 draft was centered around quarterbacks, with a record-tying six playmakers selected in the first round.

Former Oregon star Bo Nix was the last quarterback selected in the first round of the draft and will likely compete for the Broncos’ starting spot in 2024.

Nicks threw a pass to teammate Courtland Sutton during the Denver Broncos’ offseason workout, and the Pro Bowl wide receiver had high praise for the rookie.

“Bo brings a lot of great qualities to our team at the quarterback position,” Sutton said, via DNVR Sports. “He does a lot of things on the field really well. … He has a leadership mentality and he exudes that aura.”

Sean Payton is in his second season in Denver. The Super Bowl-winning coach spent 16 seasons with the New Orleans Saints before taking a break from coaching after the 2022 season.

Payton has consistently supported the decision to draft the Knicks, and was asked recently if the rookie had anything in common with 13-time Pro Bowl player Drew Brees.

Payton coached Brees for 14 seasons together in New Orleans, including a Super Bowl-winning season in 2009. From Payton’s perspective, the Knicks and Brees have some similarities but also some distinct differences.

“Well, we’re looking for similarities. Spiritually speaking. [Nix] “I want to know as much as I can as soon as I can,” Payton said, via DNVR Sports. “I think it’s probably a maturity thing, because [Nix] Appearances: 61 [in college] And when [the Saints] We got Drew, and he was coming off his rookie contract and coming back from injury.”

Payton also noted, like Brees, that the Knicks are “good with the ball and they’re accurate.”

Payton said that from a personal standpoint, Knicks and Brees disagree.

“They have different personalities,” Payton said.[Nix is] Coach’s son. Drew isn’t necessarily the coach’s son.”
