Boy Survives Fall from Fifth-Floor Window in the Bronx

A one-year-old boy astonishingly survived a fall from a fifth-floor window in the Bronx on Friday evening and is currently in stable condition at a hospital, according to police.

Authorities reported that the toddler fell from a window at 593 Oak Terrace in Mott Haven around 6:40 p.m., landing face down in the back of a six-story building.

As per the Fire Department, the child was conscious and alert when paramedics arrived at the scene.

Wilma Roman, a resident living on the first floor, described the scene, noting, “He wasn’t moving, he was just crying. His legs were crossed. He didn’t have any socks or shoes on. He was just wearing Pampers.”

The boy was transported to Harlem Hospital, where his condition is reported to be stable.

Following the incident, the NYPD stated that one person of interest is in custody. The newspaper captured images of a man being taken away from the scene in handcuffs.

In addition, several other young children were seen being escorted away by police vehicles.

Emmanual, a resident of the building, recounted watching TV in his third-floor apartment when he noticed “a shadow passing by the window.” It was shortly followed by a “loud impact sound.”

Initially, he thought it might be trash being thrown out, but upon looking closer, he realized it was a baby lying face down.

Another witness recalled seeing the young boy on a stretcher, “his face covered in bandages and his head down.” She, a mother herself, expressed her heartbreak over the incident.

Others who managed to enter the backyard where the boy fell mentioned there was “a lot of blood,” and that the boy “was not responding to the care being provided.”

Witnesses indicated that the boy’s parents were not present immediately after the fall. One woman noted seeing an older man “walking around” nearby, who didn’t seem to be the child’s father.

She observed, “I saw an older man walking back and forth, as if he had witnessed what had happened or had heard something.”

The woman commended the first responders, pointing out how effectively they managed the situation.

She noted a young firefighter who entered the building through a window and “opened the gate so authorities could respond.” She added, “It was very calm. Everyone did a really good job, even though we didn’t really know what was going on.”
