Brooke Shields Reflects on Early Fame and Ageism in Hollywood

Brooke Shields has been looking back at the discussions around her rise to fame when she was quite young. During a recent chat, she shared her experiences while promoting Acorn Television’s fresh mystery comedy series, You Are Killing Me. Shields became known as a “sex symbol” early in her career, and she explained how she managed to shift that narrative later on.

“Believe me, I would have made those changes years ago,” Shields remarked, referencing her memorable comedy song from “Friends” where she played a character obsessed with Joey, portrayed by Matt LeBlanc. “But that wasn’t what everyone wanted. They expected me to fit this mold—a sex symbol, I guess… and I accepted that.”

Reflecting further, Shields mentioned her happiest moments were spent doing sketch comedy. She shot to prominence at just 11 years old, appearing in Pretty Baby, which featured her in some controversial scenes. At 10, she even posed nude for a well-known magazine. “I found myself right in the middle of it all, promoting and performing,” she shared during a panel at the 2024 South by Southwest festival.

“I feel very fortunate,” she continued, “to have had a strong mother figure. I never fully ventured into Hollywood; I kept my life grounded with regular schools.” Shields emphasized the support system around her, which she credits for her well-being: “Having that community meant I didn’t become another statistic that Hollywood often creates.”

In addition to reflecting on her past, Shields opened up about the challenges of ageism in the entertainment industry. “At 58, society sees you as too old to be a bride but not quite ready to be a grandmother,” she noted. “Instead of getting angry about it, I think my approach should be to seek out filmmakers who appreciate the stories of women over 40. We’ve lived lives, raised families, and managed careers,” she said.

“There are definitely people out there who want to create content for women in our age group.” Shields added, “My career has revolved around the concept of beauty. As I grow older, I want to highlight the idea of beauty tied to health and gratitude. We’re more than just what’s advertised in anti-wrinkle creams.”

“It’s time to reshape the conversation and recognize that beauty can exist at any stage of life.”
