Actress Brooke Shields has slammed Hollywood for allowing her to be sexualized as a child star, saying the entertainment industry is “predicated on eating children.”
At just 11 years old, Shields made her film debut in the film Alice, Sweet Alice. A year later, she starred in the controversial film Pretty Baby, in which she played a child prostitute. She Shields appeared nude in the film, and she kissed 27-year-old actor Keith Carradine.
As a teenager, Shields appeared in highly sexualized roles in The Blue Lagoon and Endless Love.
Brooke is now speaking out about how she was sexually objectified by Hollywood when she was a child actress.
On Friday, Shields was a keynote speaker along with journalists Katie Couric and Meghan Markle, sociologist Nancy Wang Yuen and journalist Erin Haines. SXSW panel The title is “Breaking Barriers, Shaping Stories: How Women Lead on and Off Screen.”
“There was a sexualization of young women, and I was a central figure in that. I was driving it,” Shields said. Said. “I was surrounded by strong mothers and had a community around me. I didn’t become a statistic like Hollywood made me out to be.”
The 58-year-old actress said, “Hollywood is premised on eating young bodies.”
She also mentioned that Hollywood is dismissing actresses over the age of 40.
“At 58, I’m too old to be an actress, but I’m not yet a grandmother,” says Shields. said. “I think my reaction is not to get angry, but to find and seek out a filmmaker who values a woman over 40 and values her life experience.”
She added, “My entire career has been built on beauty. As I get older, my message is to express gratitude, but beauty as health. We are more than just an anti-wrinkle cream. We need to change the narrative,” he added. –And he says that there is beauty in this era as well. ”
In the documentary “Pretty Baby,” released last year, Shields spoke to her daughters about being sexually exploited as children.
Her 19-year-old daughter talked about how Brooke posed naked in Playboy magazine when she was 10 and appeared nude in a movie when she was 11, exclaiming, “That’s child porn!”
Shields said in an article: interview“It was hard for me not to be able to justify my mom to them. But when they asked me, I thought, ‘Oh, God, I have to admit this.'”
“So you can say, ‘Oh, that’s what it was like back then,’ or ‘Oh, that was art,'” Shields explained. “But I don’t know why she thought that was okay. I don’t know.”
