New York Mets Update: Key Pitcher’s Recovery Progress
LOS ANGELES – The Mets are setting their sights on the All-Star break as they anticipate the return of left-handed reliever Brooks Raley.
After undergoing Tommy John’s surgery, Raley is now back in action, facing hitters in live batting practice.
The team is optimistic that Raley might be ready for minor league rehabilitation assignments later this month.
Returning to the Mets this past April on a one-year deal worth $1.5 million, Raley’s contract includes club options for 2026. He had surgery on his left elbow for ligament injuries and bone spurs last May.
This season, the Mets did face some challenges, losing two left-handed relievers, AJ Minter and Danny Young, to season-ending surgeries. Currently, Jose Castillo, who was acquired from Arizona last month, is the only left-handed option available in the 26-man roster.
In 2023, Raley had a solid performance, boasting a 2.80 ERA over 66 appearances.
While Raley has only pitched in eight games for the Mets since his return, he is viewed as a key player for the recovery process to be expedited. He is required to complete about 10 to 12 sessions of live batting practice, following standard protocols for pitchers recovering from Tommy John’s surgery. So far, he has completed five such sessions.
The Mets’ management is hopeful that the All-Star break could mark Raley’s return to play.
Meanwhile, Sean Manaea threw 29 pitches during a live batting practice session. Manager Mendoza hasn’t ruled out minor league rehabilitation assignments for him, as he continues to recover from an oblique injury sustained during spring training.
Mendoza recently shared his thoughts on returning to Dodger Stadium, a site with a bittersweet history for the Mets, given their loss in the NLCS last October. “It’s an odd feeling knowing this is where we faced our end,” Mendoza reflected. “This year feels different; the team believes in its potential. We’re a good match for them, but I’m not dwelling on the past.”
