Browns coach doesn't confirm Shedeur Sanders as second-string quarterback after Flacco's trade

Changes in Browns’ Quarterback Situation

With Joe Flacco being traded to the Cincinnati Bengals, many assumed that the Cleveland Browns would elevate Shedeur Sanders to serve as the backup to Dillon Gabriel heading into Week 6. However, head coach Kevin Stefanski, during a recent press conference, didn’t confirm this move.

When asked if Sanders would be the “No. 2” quarterback for the upcoming game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Stefanski responded cautiously. He mentioned that the trade took them by surprise, happening quickly and not something they had prepared for. They are still navigating roster decisions and considering player development as a priority.

Stefanski expressed, “I have to look out for the players and their development… I’ll think about this long and hard because we’re investing a lot in their growth.” Therefore, while there is a chance that Sanders could be promoted, the Browns also have Bailey Zappe on the practice squad as a potential backup. Stefanski described Zappe as “an older guy now” due to his prior experience as a starter with the New England Patriots. He also highlighted that Deshaun Watson, despite not playing this season, has shown leadership.

Gabriel, drafted two rounds ahead of Sanders, had his first NFL start against the Minnesota Vikings in London after the quarterback change that came following Flacco’s rocky performance. Flacco had thrown two touchdowns but also six interceptions, contributing to Cleveland’s poor 1-3 record. Gabriel managed to throw for two touchdowns, but the Browns lost to the Vikings, falling to 1-4.

Despite the uncertainty with the quarterbacks, Stefanski conveyed optimism about the young players. He noted, “We push our players to develop. You can see that from Schedeur and the other young guys.” It seems there’s a sense of excitement in witnessing their growth as they put in hard work both on and off the field.

Sanders chose not to directly address the depth chart shift, opting instead for non-verbal gestures when asked. However, he did express happiness for Flacco after the trade, showing his support.
