The Cleveland Browns kicked off their rookie minicamp on Friday, welcoming new quarterbacks Dillon Gabriel and Chedure Sanders to the field for the first time. Gabriel was drafted in the third round, while Sanders had an unexpected fall to the fifth round. Right away, Gabriel was given his initial snap, but head coach Kevin Stefanski cautioned him about not overthinking the situation.
Stefanski remarked, “I’m not going to read too much into it.” He emphasized that while both quarterbacks performed well, he wasn’t ready to decide who would take the first snap in Saturday’s practice. He added, “I see a lot, but it’s early.” It seems there’s quite a bit of time ahead before any final decisions are made regarding the lineup.
With the season still a few months off, Stefanski insisted that the selection process will be thorough and not solely focused on practice performance. Currently, five quarterbacks are on the Browns’ roster, leaving a cloud of uncertainty over who will start in week one. Deshaun Watson, the previous starter, faced surgeries on both his Achilles tendon and other injury complications last season.
The recent additions of Gabriel and Sanders certainly add a twist to the ongoing quarterback competition, particularly after the Browns also traded for Kenny Pickett and signed Joe Fraco earlier. It’s shaping up to be a crowded field as they all vie for the top spot.
