Potential Trade for Browns Coach Kevin Stefanski
Head coach trades aren’t common in the NFL, but there may be some movement this offseason. According to NFL insider Connor Orr from Sports Illustrated, discussions have arisen regarding a possible trade involving the Cleveland Browns’ head coach, Kevin Stefanski.
Orr noted that there’s been some talk throughout the league about this situation—referred to as “smoke” by one insider.
Trading a head coach is, well, pretty tricky, but it’s not out of the question. Historically, it has occurred before, like in 2023 when the Broncos sent first- and second-round picks to the Saints for Sean Payton. The Jets have a history with this too, trading Bill Parcells for four picks in 1997 and later sending Bill Belichick to New England in exchange for three draft picks in 2000.
Still, as of Friday, Orr mentioned that a trade involving Stefanski didn’t seem urgent or expected.
Stefanski has led the Browns for nearly six seasons now, guiding the team to playoff appearances in 2020 and 2023, and winning NFL Coach of the Year honors during those years. Despite this success, things have been a struggle lately, with a dismal 3-14 record in 2024 and the team entering Week 18 this season with a 4-12 record.
As rumors swirl around Stefanski’s future, some players from the Browns have spoken up about him. Rookie quarterback Shedul Sanders expressed confidence, suggesting the team doesn’t pay attention to “outside noise.” He remarked, “We have the utmost respect for him,” implying that the media might be amplifying the situation unnecessarily.
Defensive end Myles Garrett took a slightly different approach, emphasizing his commitment to the team’s success regardless of who the coach is. He stated, “I want things to be successful, no matter what” and added, “I’m committed to winning.” Garrett is focused on achieving goals rather than “tanking or rebuilding.”
