Bernie Kosar Receives Liver Transplant

Legendary Cleveland Browns quarterback Bernie Kosar announced on social media that he underwent a liver transplant on Monday, having been on the waiting list for over a year.

In his video message, he expressed optimism, saying, “Hey, go out and feel good. I’m ready to enjoy the rest of the week and the rest of my life.”

The transplant was performed at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, according to a spokesperson, who also highlighted the deep affection the medical team has for Kosar. “We are amazed by his indomitable spirit that Browns fans have come to know and love over the years,” she noted. The spokesperson also emphasized their gratitude toward the donors and their families, but due to confidentiality, further details about them couldn’t be shared.

Back in 2024, Kosar revealed to Cleveland Magazine that he was diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver and Parkinson’s disease, which led to him being placed on the transplant list. Fortunately, doctors indicated that he has shown some improvement since his diagnosis.

Kosar kicked off his professional career with the Browns in 1985, spending nine seasons with the team. He finished his career with the Dallas Cowboys, who won the Super Bowl at the end of the 1993 season. He has thrown for a total of 21,904 yards during his time with the Browns and still holds third place on the franchise’s all-time passing list.

Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski shared his well wishes with Kosar on Monday. “Bernie is my sweetheart,” he remarked, acknowledging the special bond Kosar has with the community and his ongoing support for Stefanski and his family.

As Kosar continues his journey, many fans and former players are rallying behind him, wishing him all the best in his recovery.
