Browns players penalized for mimicking smoking after scoring a touchdown

Cal Gets Schooled on Odd Sports

Cal is left confused as callers repeatedly ask him about unfamiliar sports, including one that’s played by wizards.

NFL celebrations are back in the spotlight, especially as a couple of players from the Cleveland Browns discover that the league’s rules can be a bit unclear. One thing’s for sure: you can’t act like you’re smoking weed in the end zone.

Apologies, but those are the guidelines.

This week, the Browns faced off against the Pittsburgh Steelers, and during the second quarter, running back Quinshon Judkins scored a touchdown. Naturally, he celebrated by pretending to smoke a joint.

As you might guess, the league did not appreciate this display.

On Saturday, it was reported that both Judkins and QB Deshaun Watson received fines of $14,397 each, while guard Austin Barber, who also mimicked hitting an invisible blunt, was fined $6,944.

This fine comes shortly after the NFL had rescinded penalties against 49ers fullback Kyle Juszczyk and Cowboys tight end Jake Ferguson for mimicking drinking an imaginary beverage.

After discussions with the NFL Players Association, it turned out that drinking celebrations were deemed acceptable, but smoking celebrations remain off-limits.

This clarification, I guess, helps a bit… but I’m thinking we need to dig a little deeper.

For the sake of fully understanding these rules, why not have a player score and then celebrate by pretending to sip whiskey while puffing on an imaginary cigar?

Is that categorized as a drinking celebration, or a smoking one?

To me, it just sounds like a sophisticated detective relaxing in his study, but how would the NFL view it? Is it a fine? Or not? Would the penalty be lighter because the drinking is involved?

And does it even matter that they’re just pretending to smoke something without any of the “Reefer Madness” connotations?

Clearly, fans and players could use some clarity regarding the fine lines between smoking and drinking celebrations. This, it seems, is the only way to figure it out.

Well, someone could just ask, but where’s the fun in that?
