The Cleveland Browns made some roster cuts on Sunday, letting go of quarterback Tyler Huntley following their last preseason game against the Los Angeles Rams. This decision leaves them with four quarterbacks: Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel, and Shedeur Sanders. Interestingly, this might be their only adjustment before the regular season kicks off.
Along with the news, it was reported that the Browns intend to keep these four quarterbacks on their 53-man roster. Meanwhile, Deshaun Watson is sidelined due to a torn Achilles injury, which complicates their plans a bit.
Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance this preseason, stating, “I thought it was a good finish to ensure these guys showed the necessary effort as a team.” He acknowledged that, as tough as it is, roster cuts are a part of the process that they need to manage in the coming days.
Looking ahead, they have several practices lined up from Monday to Thursday, followed by a break for Labor Day before gearing up for their first game against Cincinnati.
After Pickett’s injury, Huntley stepped in and faced the Rams during the fourth quarter. In a previous game against the Philadelphia Eagles, he completed 10 of 13 passes, totaling 71 yards. Flacco has already been named the starting quarterback for the upcoming week, with Pickett expected to be available, likely as a backup. Stefanski noted that Pickett is showing improvement in his recovery from a hamstring issue.
The Browns added Flacco to their roster during the offseason and acquired Pickett from the Eagles. Both Gabriel and Sanders were selected during the draft.
In his final preseason game against the Rams, Shedeur Sanders struggled, being sacked five times, while Gabriel managed to throw a touchdown pass. For now, it appears both rookies remain safe on the roster, but only time will tell how things unfold.
