Shedeur Sanders Shines in NFL Preseason Debut
Shedeur Sanders kicked off his NFL career impressively, much like his father did in his time. Following the game, he had no qualms about addressing reporters.
During the Cleveland Browns’ preseason opener against the Carolina Panthers, Sanders threw for 138 yards and two touchdowns. This performance has sparked discussions beyond just football.
In a YouTube video shared by his brother, Deion Sanders Jr., Shedeur confronted ESPN’s Tony Grossi at Bank of America Stadium. While Sanders adopted a sarcastic tone, the interaction was light-hearted rather than confrontational.
“Tony, I hope you have something good to say about me,” Sanders remarked. “You often say negative things, and to be honest, I’ve never heard anything positive from you.”
I didn’t catch Grossi’s immediate response, but they later shared a laugh. “What am I doing wrong?” Sanders joked as he left.
Post-game, Grossi’s feedback on Sanders was shared on ESPN Cleveland. He commented, “I thought Shedeur performed excellently.” He also noted that Sanders is positioned to challenge other quarterbacks in the lineup to step up in the coming week.
The Browns are set to face off against the Philadelphia Eagles for their next preseason game. According to head coach Kevin Stefanski, Sanders will see significant playing time there.
While Grossi has had his criticisms of Sanders, he isn’t the only one expressing skepticism in the football community. After an unexpected performance at the NFL Draft in April, criticism has followed him, even before taking his first snap.
Throughout training camp, Sanders has mainly worked with second and third-string players, which has added to the scrutiny surrounding him.
But after Friday night’s performance, it seems the narrative about this high-profile rookie is shifting, intensifying the competition for the Browns’ quarterback position. Joe Flacco’s role is definitely in question, but as Grossi noted, both Kenny Pickett and rookie Dillon Gabriel now feel the heat after what Shedeur showcased in Charlotte.
