Browns should consider trading Shedeur Sanders or Dillon Gabriel, says former quarterback

Griffin Suggests Browns Trade One Quarterback

Former NFL player Robert Griffin III stated on Monday that the Cleveland Browns should consider trading either Chedur Sanders or Dillon Gabriel, suggesting that one of them needs to be positioned as the face of the franchise.

Griffin, who played for the Browns himself, expressed his thoughts following the team’s final preseason game. He noted that Sanders was unable to showcase his skills during a critical two-minute drill in the fourth quarter, primarily because he was on the field with lower-tier teammates. In contrast, the team had recently used Tyler Huntley before releasing him shortly after.

“I think the Cleveland Browns need to move on from either Chedur Sanders or Dillon Gabriel,” Griffin commented. “Currently, there’s a toxic atmosphere surrounding the quarterback situation, which is stifling for both players. Cleveland should designate Chedur Sanders as the future quarterback.”

He elaborated, indicating that the roster decisions don’t seem beneficial for either player. “After drafting Dillon Gabriel in the third round, then taking a chance on Chedur Sanders in the fifth, it seems like they’re not giving Sanders the competition he deserves. Many would argue Sanders has first-round potential based on his tape, but he hasn’t been given the opportunity to prove it.”

Griffin stressed that neither quarterback appears to be in an environment that sets them up for success, especially in light of their last preseason game. Gabriel performed excellently, executing the two-minute drill, while Sanders didn’t get a similar chance. “They chose to give Tyler Huntley that opportunity, which was a questionable decision by Kevin Stefanski and the Browns’ management,” he said.

Griffin acknowledged that while Sanders carries significant expectations due to his lineage—his father being a Hall of Fame cornerback—his performance should define his future in the NFL, not just his name. “Chedur has been under scrutiny since day one. He put up impressive numbers at Jackson State and should prove his worth based on skills, not heritage,” he added.

Despite some glimmers of hope, Griffin believes opportunities are still lacking for the quarterbacks. “When he played his first preseason game and threw two touchdown passes, you’d think he’d get more chances. But it seems the Browns aren’t allowing him or any quarterback to really compete, and that’s detrimental to everyone on the roster,” he concluded.

On the same day, Cleveland made a deal not involving Sanders or Gabriel, trading Kenny Pickett to the Las Vegas Raiders for a fifth-round pick in 2026. With veteran Joe Flacco on the scene, it seems both Sandus and Gabriel are still in a precarious position.
