Bruce Pearl and Auburn’s Loss in SEC Tournament
Bruce Pearl, notable for his recent reaction during Auburn’s 72-62 defeat against Tennessee in the SEC Tournament, isn’t shy about admitting that nepotism played a role in his son Stephen landing the head coaching position at Auburn.
A video circulating on social media captured Pearl vocally expressing his frustration during the game, though it wasn’t immediately clear what triggered his outburst. He was heard shouting, “That’s a bull—” as tensions escalated.
The seasoned coach-turned-broadcaster appeared to have a heated moment before taking his seat. He also took to social media after the game to voice his disappointment.
In a post, he mentioned: “We had rim protection, and whatever happened in the last 10 minutes was forgivable.”
Thursday was particularly challenging for both men. Despite pushing hard for their chances, the loss to Tennessee seriously dented the Tigers’ hopes for the NCAA Tournament.
Auburn initially led by ten points in the second half, but Tennessee turned the momentum around with a stunning 20-0 run.
Even after the setback, Stephen Pearl believes his team remains in contention for a tournament berth, stating that their accomplishments still make them a worthy candidate.
“Our players have the best wins in college basketball. This team deserves to be in the tournament,” he shared with reporters. “I think we ultimately did well enough to get our name called on Selection Sunday.”
After Bruce Pearl’s comments about Miami, which he later revised to endorse their place in the tournament, Stephen mentioned his eagerness to potentially compete against them in the First Four. “I hope so. A 31-0 record means we have two very deserving teams. Accomplishing that feeds into what the tournament is all about,” he remarked, acknowledging that even tough schedules can lead to great achievements.
