Bruce Pearl Critiques Democrats After Border Patrol Shooting in Minnesota
On Monday, former college basketball coach Bruce Pearl spoke out against Democrats following a fatal shooting involving Border Patrol in Minnesota over the weekend. He placed part of the blame on Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and other Democratic leaders for escalating tensions while federal authorities enforce immigration laws.
Pearl, now associated with OutKick’s program “Please Don’t Attack Me with Dan Dakich,” expressed his sorrow over the situation, stating, “It’s really terrible. I’m so sorry… These deaths didn’t need to happen.” He emphasized that both sides need to make compromises because the current environment is incredibly charged. “I definitely fault Governor Walz for his response,” he added, highlighting past incidents like the George Floyd protests and how they relate to the current situation.
Addressing the matter of calls to action from Democratic politicians, he noted, “They’re considering treating ICE and law enforcement like Nazis,” calling this perspective fundamentally wrong. Pearl pointed out that it is the elected government’s responsibility to enforce immigration laws and criticized the influx of illegal immigration as unfortunate.
In response to the same incident, Governor Walz compared the federal immigration crackdown to the Holocaust, citing the shooting of Alex J. Preti in Minneapolis. Official reports initially claimed that Preti was armed and resisting arrest; however, local witnesses suggest he was disarmed before being shot.
Walz mentioned that children in Minnesota are now fearful because of federal actions, a sentiment that stirred reactions across the sports community. Pearl urged Congress to come together in addressing immigration reform. “I’m for legal immigration. We have to solve the immigration problem,” he stated, calling for an end to inaction and urging lawmakers to take responsibility.
Pearl concluded that it’s crucial to lower the intensity of the current climate. The shooting incident has already led to a postponement of the game between the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Golden State Warriors.
Meanwhile, NBA fans organized protests against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) both inside and outside the arena, reflecting the wider discontent surrounding the situation.
