Michael Wilbon, a critic from ESPN, seems to express approval regarding Bruce Pearl’s recent decision to resign as the head men’s basketball coach for the Auburn Tigers.
Wilbon noted that he had previously told Pearl about “suspending amnesty,” indicating his hope for increased “pressure” to expel him from the program. Pearl has been recognized as one of college basketball’s top coaches, earning two Final Four appearances during his tenure.
“He had become a divisive figure, seemingly by choice, and I really hope there was pressure leading to his departure,” Wilbon remarked.
Now 65, Pearl has assumed a role as the program’s ambassador and has dismissed speculation about running for the U.S. Senate, despite some rumors suggesting he might replace Alabama Senator Tommy Tuberville when he runs for governor. He acknowledged the discussions around pursuing a Senate seat, saying it would have required leaving Auburn.
Pearl has also been open about his political views lately. Being one of the few Jewish head coaches in NCAA basketball, he has strongly supported Israel, particularly following the Hamas attacks on October 7th. He has also shown support for former President Donald Trump’s approach to conflicts in the Middle East, and he was even named president of the American Israeli Education Association.
Additionally, Pearl wrapped up his coaching career with a record of 246 wins and 125 losses as the head coach of the Tigers.
