Springsteen Cover Band Gig Canceled Amid Political Tensions
There’s some controversy brewing over President Donald Trump’s opinions, as a Bruce Springsteen tribute band faces a canceled gig. This band, known for covering classic rock songs, was set to perform at a bar on the Jersey Shore, but it seems the conservative leaning of the owner’s clientele played a role in the decision.
The “Ultimate Springsteen Tribute” band has been serving up classic rock for over 20 years and was scheduled to play at a venue in Tom’s River. The cancellation comes on the heels of Springsteen’s recent comments about Trump, which he made during his European tour. Band leader Brad Hobbycorn mentioned that the bar’s owner expressed concerns through text messages about the potential backlash.
It was reported that Springsteen has just released a recording from a live show in Manchester, where he shared his views on Trump’s presidency, calling it “corrupt” and “incompetent.” Following this, the bar’s owner, Vivoli, cited the risk of alienating customers as the reason for pulling the plug on the show.
Interestingly, Hobbycorn offered to adapt the band’s setlist, proposing that they avoid classic rock covers altogether. However, the owner ultimately decided against moving forward, citing financial concerns tied to the cover band market.
“This really isn’t political for us,” Hobbycorn stated, emphasizing that the band was focused on making a living and providing for those reliant on their performances. He expressed disappointment over the whole situation.
There’s also some ambiguity regarding whether the bar owner canceled the event or if the band opted out due to the perceived negative atmosphere surrounding the upcoming shows.
Meanwhile, Trump hasn’t held back in response to the criticism, labeling Springsteen as out of touch with everyday Americans. This isn’t the first time political tensions have affected live music; in 2017, another local band that covered Springsteen’s songs stepped back from a gig associated with Trump’s inauguration after facing backlash.
As for the tribute band scene, it thrives on nostalgia, offering fans a taste of classic rock through performances that often draw big crowds, especially when original artists are no longer touring or ticket prices become prohibitive.
