Bruce Willis’ Wife Shares Warning Signs Before Dementia Diagnosis

Before Bruce Willis received his diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia, his wife, Emma Heming Willis, noted some “surprising” changes in his behavior. She remarked that he became quieter than usual, a stark contrast to his typically “warm” and lively personality. In a preview interview with Diane Sawyer for an ABC special titled “Emma and Bruce Willis: An Unexpected Journey,” she expressed, “For someone who’s very talkative and very engaged, he was a little more quiet. When the family gathers, he’ll melt a bit.”

Emma described the shift as feeling quite cold, saying, “To go from being very warm and loving to the complete opposite was surprisingly scary.” In March 2022, it was made public that Bruce was stepping away from acting due to a diagnosis of aphasia, and it was soon after revealed that he had been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia, or FTD.

Emma’s Feelings of Isolation and Fear

Emma expressed feelings of being “lost and isolated” as she navigated caregiving after the devastating diagnosis. She recounted that the day they received the news, they left the doctor’s office with just a pamphlet and no clear guidance. “There was no plan, no hope, no shock. The future we imagined simply disappeared,” she said. She faced the challenge of raising their two young daughters while trying to care for Bruce, battling an illness that she felt overwhelmed by.

“I felt lost, isolated and scared,” Emma admitted. “What I really needed at that appointment was medical information. Someone should have said, ‘I know it feels impossible right now, but you will find your footing and you will grow from this.’

Recently, Emma noted that Bruce has slowly lost his ability to speak. “The blues are still very mobile. The blues are in a really healthy state overall,” she reassured. “It’s his brain that’s making him fail.” Despite the challenges, she said, they have developed a way to communicate. When asked if there was a day he looked at her like he used to, she replied, “We’re his laugh, right? My husband is still here.”

Upcoming Book Release

Emma is preparing to release a book titled “An Unexpected Journey: Finding Yourself in the Path of Strength, Hope, and Caregiving” this September. “This book is a roadmap that I wish someone had given me on that day in 2022,” she said. “I wrote it for other caregivers who long for answers, seek support, and wonder how they’ll get through it.”

Emma emphasized her access to experts in the field due to Bruce’s situation, stating, “I knew it was a privilege and didn’t want to keep that information to myself… I have a voice and resources that not everyone has.”

Bruce and Emma tied the knot in March 2009 in Turks and Caicos and share two daughters, Mabel and Evelyn. Bruce was previously married to Demi Moore for 12 years, and the ex-couple shares three daughters: Rumer, Scout, and Tallulah.
