Brayan Bello Faces Demotion to Triple-A

The recent demotion of Brayan Bello to Triple-A Worcester hit him pretty hard. The 27-year-old right-hander struggled with the Boston Red Sox, particularly during a game against the Orioles where he allowed eight earned runs in just five innings on June 4.

Bello expressed his feelings, saying, “It was a really tough day,” through a translator. He added, “As you all know, I had a bad trip… So when I heard the disappointing news, I cried a little and got a little emotional. I have so much love and passion for this game, so it was really hard to hear that bad news. But today we got better.”

For the season, Bello holds a 2-6 record with a 6.34 ERA, which marks the lowest of his career, and a 1.67 WHIP, all under a six-year contract worth $55 million through 2024.

It seemed at one point that Bello was making progress before his disastrous outing against Baltimore. After that, he transitioned to the bullpen, where he served as a long reliever. During that time, he pitched 25.1 innings, giving up only 2 earned runs, resulting in a much-improved 0.74 ERA.

Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow mentioned that he suggested Bello “fall in love with baseball” again.

As Bello gears up for a Thursday start with the Woosox, it’s hoped that this opportunity will help him find his footing again.

The Red Sox have called up Joe La Sorsa, a left-handed reliever, to take Bello’s place. However, this change may not be permanent. With openings in the starting rotation, prospect Jake Bennett is in the mix to take over Bello’s spot. Bello’s next scheduled start is on Tuesday, when team decisions may continue to evolve.

Currently, the Red Sox are in dire need of assistance, sitting last in the American League East with a record of 27 wins and 36 losses. They have struggled since their ace, Garrett Crochet, was placed on the injured list in late April and subsequently moved to the 60-day IL due to complications in his recovery.
