The family of Bryan Kohberger expressed their support for his efforts to reverse his murder convictions, hoping for what they call the “complete and unvarnished truth” to emerge during a trial.
Kohberger, who is 31 and was once a doctoral student in criminal justice, is currently serving four consecutive life sentences. He pleaded guilty to the murders of four college students in an off-campus residence in Moscow, Idaho, back in November 2022.
While he did concede to the murders to avoid the death penalty, Kohberger now asserts his innocence, claiming he was “convinced to falsely confess.”
“My actual innocence is my truth, and the plea, hinged on false promises and blatant disinformation, MUST be withdrawn,” he mentioned in a statement to the New York Times last month.
The Kohberger family has been careful in expressing their support, aiming not to increase the suffering of the victims’ loved ones, whom they acknowledge have shown incredible bravery.
“This support stems from our desire to see the truth revealed. Like many, we are looking for answers to the numerous questions posed, which can only be uncovered through a proper trial rather than an improper plea,” they stated.
Earlier this month, Kohberger filed a motion seeking a new judge to supervise his proceedings, claiming that Judge Steven Hippler made biased remarks during his sentencing last July.
During the sentencing phase, Hippler commented that Kohberger’s actions had erased any “good or intrinsically human” aspects of his character, labeling him “the worst of the worst.”
Additionally, Kohberger has requested that the case be relocated back to Latah County, the site of the murders.
A hearing regarding his requests for a new judge and case location is scheduled for October 15, with another hearing for post-conviction relief set for June 17, 2027.
